A Mourner’s Rights

In a grief-avoiding world, we often receive advice about how we “should” be grieving - for instance, “you should be over this by now” or “your [person] wouldn’t want you to cry”. And yet, telling our grief story over and over is how we make meaning. And crying, laughing, feeling angry and needing time alone are all part of the experience.

I love the Mourner’s Bill of Rights from Alan Wolfelt; it confirms that the we have the right to experience grief in our own unique ways. Find the Mourner’s Bill of Rights here.
